Cake Smash Photos - What's The Fuss?Cake Smash and Splash photography sessions are becoming more and more popular, and are fast becoming my best selling session! The main concept is that a baby is let loose on a whole birthday cake while a photographer snaps away - messy, but fun! It's a bit of a marmite session - some love it (me included!) and some do not like the idea at all, due to the cake wastage (although you'd be surprised at how much cake is left over at the end; some parents have even taken it home to use the good side as baby's birthday cake!!) What happens at a cake smash photo shoot with Little Cherubs Photography? My sessions start with some simple portraits, focusing on baby on this special milestone. I ask my clients to bring a couple of baby's best outfits for this part of the session, which usually lasts 10-20 minutes. Whilst I set up the cake smash set, parents dress baby in the cake smash outfit - this can either be one of the outfits provided in the studio, or parents can bring their own. The list of possible themes and colours for the session are endless; if there's something specific you have in mind, let me know when you book in and I'll do my best to accommodate it - I've had Disney inspired, rainbows, even a zombie cake smash! Once baby is ready, out comes the cake and so the chaos begins! Babies are usually a little unsure when they have the cake in front of them, so I encourage parents to get some and let them have a little taste - that way they know it is for eating and tastes great! Some babies totally go for it and smash the cake to pieces, but most pick at the icing and take delicate nibbles of cake - yet they still end up covered in it, even if the cake is mostly still in tact! What is the best way to clean up after a cake smash? A splash in the tub! I have Johnson's bubble bath in the studio, but if your baby has sensitive skin, I recommend you bring your own in. I provide a towel to dry baby off afterwards too. Tips for getting the most out of your cake smash photo session -
Of course, cake smashes aren't just for babies! Maybe you have an older child who would love to have a cake smash, or even a grown up one for a special birthday?

I backed up all of my phone pictures last night, and out of around 600 photos, I was in three. Three! You never know what is around the corner and I want to leave my children with photographs of me (actual physical photographs - when was the last time you loaded up a floppy disk, or a CD?) which they can then pass on to grandchildren and so on, keeping memories alive. It's time we existed in photographs! I'm not saying everyone should go out and book a professional photographer - I understand that everyone's budgets stretch in different ways and sometimes it's just not possible. But we should get in more photographs with our children, if you don't have anyone to take a picture - take a selfie! In our house, it's always me taking photographs (of course haha!) and I've taken hundreds of the kids and their daddy, but men often don't think to take pictures of us with the children - and they're not completely to blame; how many of us mums cringe when someone tries to take a photograph of us? Maybe we feel too big, too skinny, too wobbly, hair is too messy, no makeup... it really doesn't matter, our children won't care that we hadn't washed our hair for two days before the picture was taken (thank goodness for dry shampoo!). We need to be more proactive in being included in photographs. With this in mind, I launched my Mum & Me mini sessions. Mini sessions are exactly what they say on the tin, smaller versions of my standard sessions, but with the added value of products included in the session price. So, this post went in a totally different direction to what I'd initially planned! But the main point is this - we need to be in more photos with our children, end of. For those who aren't aware of what this is, it's your (and don't forget one for baby - I'll cover that another time) overnight bag (pack for a few nights just in case) for when you go into hospital to have your baby.
So what should you pack in your bag? It's easy to forget things as you pack, you will remember things like clothes for you and baby, but what about the rest? I asked some new mums for their 'must have' hospital bag essentials:
Do you have any other must have items to pack in your hospital bag? Please let me know in the comments! Emma :) |
